Piano Camp at Jupiter Academy of Music

girls-2

Piano Camp has become a summer tradition at Jupiter Academy of Music. Students work in small groups with three of JAM's piano faculty members to compose music, play in piano ensemples, have fun learning about music history and famous composers and play music games. At least one year of prior piano lessons is required. The following is a tribute to the 2009 Piano Camp, written by piano teacher, Karen Miller.

Oh, what a week we had!

We met each other on Monday morning not knowing what to expect and by Friday we wanted camp to go on forever!

We became not only better pianists but more complete musicians, more confident in our skins.

We sang silly songs about composers and played crazy rhythm games.

We watched cool movies about compositions and composers and created clever science experiments with sound.

We explored little bits of music theory and music history and imagined the lives that Beethoven, Brahms, and Strauss must have lived.

We drew pictures, made posters, wrote poems and danced.

At the piano we performed with each other and for our parents.

We even played on our very own colorful glass harmonica at the recital on Friday.

Mostly we just had fun, lots and lots of happy, healthy musical fun!

And now that we've been to piano camp for a week, we're all able to understand so much more about music and how it affects our world for the better.

I only wish that I'd had the chance to go to piano camp before I got to be all grown up!

We'll need to have a reunion soon!  Until then remember ... please don't feed the pianists!
